Horseradish root is an easy to grow perennial in the Brassicaceae family that has multiple functions within the orchard and the homestead.
First, if you like horseradish, planting a few roots will give you a lifetime access to these edible roots which excel in creating the most wonderful, spicy condiment. But there’s a lot more to it than this.
It is also known as a medicinal plant that is good for:
Dissolving mucus in the sinuses.
Increasing your intake of glucosinolates (reduces carcinogens within the liver)
Excellent vitamin and mineral content.
Within the orchard, it is a great plant for a Permaculture guild (plants that work together for a more productive sum than their individual plants). We grow it with our cherry trees and it does seem to encourage fruiting. We’re not alone as The Greenhouse Bed and Breakfast shares how horseradish has helped their cherry trees as well.
Their greens are an edible bitter green and work well in stir frys. They’re easy to prepare and easy to preserve. Great nutrient for year round use. Here is a great link from the Forage Chef on how to use them in your cooking.
Price includes 2 roots and FREE shipping.
We highly recommend protecting your trees with a tree tube
Growing trees in the Northeast has proved challenging. One of our main struggles has been with deer and other tree nibbling predators.
Not only were our orchard trees being nibbled and rubbed, but now the deer/rabbits/porcupines/voles and more were heading towards our nursery stock.
I guess when you set out a buffet, the animals say ‘THANKS!’
We decided to purchase a few hundred TREE PRO Miracle Tree Tubes and were quickly sold on the benefits.
Trees that seemed to be stuck in their growth were now growing. We no longer had to constantly move electric fencing. Even trees in remote areas on the farm were thriving.
Where we had ordered them last year to offer to you, Tree Pro started selling them on Amazon (of course) and they are cheaper and offer FREE Shipping. We still highly recommend them!
