Black Walnuts are a fabulous top-story tree with a huge shade canopy.
This native nut is cased in thick shells which produces extraordinary, sweet nut meats.
Grow close together (20′) for wood production. Grow farther apart (50′) for nut production.
Locate them away from most fruit trees and gardens, the exceptions being mulberries, elderberries, and apples, due to the juglone that can inhibit competing plants.
Will fruit in 5 to 10 years in moist, well-drained soils.
1′-2′ whips. Perfect for woodlands or edge of property.
Zones 4-8 (hardy to zone 3, but does not produce nuts well in extreme cold)
